Hair is the tool: The person is the purpose

Growing up as an African child in foster care, I was placed in many different homes, most of them Caucasian households. My foster parents were loving and caring, but there was one thing they couldn't teach me: how to care for my hair.

As I got older, I began to understand the connection between hair, identity, and culture. I spent hours in front of the mirror experimenting with different styles and learning what worked for me. What started as curiosity became something much deeper.

My hair became an outlet.

Through doing my hair, I learned patience, built confidence, and developed a stronger connection to myself and my culture. Hair taught me lessons that extended far beyond beauty.

That is why Hairapy was created.

Hairapy uses hair as a tool for personal growth. While learning hair care and styling techniques, participants also build confidence, self-awareness, patience, and creativity. The goal goes beyond hair—the goal is to learn more about yourself.

Hairapy is for Black children and women who may not have access to hair education, guidance, or support. We believe learning how to care for your hair is more than a skill; it is an opportunity to develop confidence, self-expression, and a stronger sense of identity.

We also hope to reshape the conversation around therapy within the Black community. Healing can begin in many ways, and Hairapy creates a space where learning, creativity, and self-discovery come together.

Hair is the tool.

The person is the purpose.
